Cirque Berzerk
Since it is officially summer I’m doing a theme week: 3 of my favorite things to do in LA in the summer.
First up: The Best Circus ever, Cirque Berzerk
Let me start by saying this is NOT for the kiddies. This is an adult themed, gothic, vaudevillian, Cabaret circus. It is located just north of downtown in the fabulous LA State Historic Park (aka The Cornfield: more on this place another time), but you feel like you’ve entered another world. Outside the main tent is a smaller, hay filled tent with a stage, a decently priced bar, food and clothing booths, explosions, and free antique pinball. This is definitely a party, but the show is a spectacle that I cannot begin to describe. The entire experience is intoxicating and transports you to a time and place you have never imagined; unless you’re Tim Burton or David Lynch. Yet at the same time this is an “only in LA” type of event.
The run has just been extended through the end of July, so there should be plenty of tickets available (hint: I got discount tickets through Goldstar). Make a night of it; get there early with a picnic dinner (we gabbed sandwiches from Philippe’s, a 10 min walk from the park), grab a few drinks, and get in some amazing people watching before the show. After the show you wont want to go home so stay for the party. Finally, don’t be surprised if you start contemplating running away to join the circus.
