Kayaks on the water

Summer equals water, well to me. I love to be in, on or near the water. One of my favorite activities is kayaking. I don’t get enough chances to kayak in LA, but recently found a fabulous place to hit the water for a couple hours.

Kayaks on the Water is my favorite rental place in LA. They are in Long Beach at Alamitos Bay. It’s a beautiful calm bay near the ocean, but protected from the currents and most of the traffic. The area is surrounded by homes and private docks.  My favorite thing to do is kayak thru the canals of Naples and work up a good appetite, then dock at one of the public docks, grab a tasty lunch, and work it off by taking the long way back. The best part is single kayak rentals are $8/hour, about half the price you’ll find in Malibu or Marina Del Rey.

No experience is necessary (though they do make you swear 5 times over that you know how to swim). They supply the life jacket, the kayak and paddle; they’ll even give you a quick tutorial.

If you’re looking for a fabulous day on the water and want something a little different, this is a cheap and fun way to explore the Bay. Of course, since this is LA, they are open year round!

LA Reconnaissance (LA Recon) is an LA based scavenger hunt company, formed by Kimberly Olpin and Amy Trulock. Teams of 2-4 people solve challenging clues that lead them around LA neighborhoods where they must perform tasks and answer questions. They are fun, silly, and informative adventures which focus on discovering LA’s hidden treasures: historical, folklore, quirky, obscure, and occasionally off the beaten path.

LA Recon was started after Kim and Amy created a crazy adventure for their friends on the occasion of Kim’s 30th birthday. Both are Southern California natives who love to explore and find unique events and places. Kim decided she wanted to share some of her favorite discoveries with her friends, so together they created a day long adventure encompassing Hollywood and downtown LA. After a very successful Birthday hunt, they decided the plan more in different places around the city. Now they are opening their hunts to the public to show off the city they love.

Likewise, this blog will showcase our editorial picks for our favorite things in, around, and about Los Angeles.
