DWP Holiday Light Festival

I’m always conflicted during the holidays. The hippie, green side of me sees the waste of electricity and wrapping paper, and just our general over abundance of stuff. Something inside me wants to start lecturing the world about waste. But the kid in me, who is still a very very strong force, absolutely ADORES tacky garish Christmas. The more lights, the more color the better! So this time of year is a balancing act for me, lots of LED lights please, make sure to recycle that paper, etc. Because, honestly I ‘m not sure I will ever stop loving overdone Christmas displays. Luckily here in LA we have a fabulous city sponsored display of excess, the DWP Holiday Light Festival.

This is the 14th year where they take a mile long stretch of Crystal Springs Dr in Griffith park and fill it with lots of fun light displays for you to drive thru. According to the DWP the “festival symbolizes LADWP’s proud history and shared legacy of service to the people of the city.”

Now for those of you who want to enjoy this in a slightly greener fashion, from the 17th-30th they have shuttles you can ride with others instead of your own car. The 3rd is bike night. The 11th-13th are Family fun Vehicle Free nights. And finally Mon-Thur the 9th-30th you can ride your horse.

And a warning, this is popular, on weekend nights it can take an hour or two to get through the display.

Merry Christmas!

LA Reconnaissance (LA Recon) is an LA based scavenger hunt company, formed by Kimberly Olpin and Amy Trulock. Teams of 2-4 people solve challenging clues that lead them around LA neighborhoods where they must perform tasks and answer questions. They are fun, silly, and informative adventures which focus on discovering LA’s hidden treasures: historical, folklore, quirky, obscure, and occasionally off the beaten path.

LA Recon was started after Kim and Amy created a crazy adventure for their friends on the occasion of Kim’s 30th birthday. Both are Southern California natives who love to explore and find unique events and places. Kim decided she wanted to share some of her favorite discoveries with her friends, so together they created a day long adventure encompassing Hollywood and downtown LA. After a very successful Birthday hunt, they decided the plan more in different places around the city. Now they are opening their hunts to the public to show off the city they love.

Likewise, this blog will showcase our editorial picks for our favorite things in, around, and about Los Angeles.
